ROSG is delighted to announce a brand new season of Fíor Scéal: a collection of award winninginternational documentaries that continue to cast a thought-provoking and fearless eye on issueswhich affect us – environmentally, socially, politically and globally.
A number of the new season’s programmes report on the devastating global effects of climatechange. The brand new series of Fíor Scéal will begin Thursday 14 September at the new time of 11pm onTG4.
Among the first documentaries of the new season are:
Insects to the Rescue 14.09.17 @ 11.00pm
Invertebrates, insects, mites, fungi, bacteria, viruses… these living mini-organisms that scientists arestudying in great detail worldwide, will here make light work of pests. Today they are our best hopeof a pesticide-free agriculture that is so harmful to man and the environment. In Europe, Brazil andIndia, millions of farmers have already adopted bioprotectors. Today, the agro-chemical industry isinvesting heavily in the sector, but promising as it is, the technique is still far from being infallible, and is not entirely devoid of risk to the ecosystem.
Decommissioning Nuclear Power Plants – Mission Impossible 21.09.17 @ 11.00pm
From France to the USA to Germany, the countries that have banked on nuclear energy are todayfacing a new challenge: decommissioning their power plants that are either ageing or are definitivelyceasing activity. Forty years ago, their designers did not foresee that, once the plants had becometoo old and therefore dangerous, they would need to be dismantled, and that highly radioactivewaste would need to be stocked. Although both plant operators and nuclear safety authorities claimthey are in full control of the decommissioning process, the reality is somewhat different.
Iceland Living on a Powder Keg 21.09.17 @ 11.00pm
In spring 2010, ash clouds from the Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajökul, brought air traffic over half ofEurope to a standstill. In Iceland itself, the area around the village Vik, at the outermost southern tipof the island, was affected the most. Apart from problems from pervasive ash, Vik got off lightlyafter the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull. But what would happen if the considerably bigger neighbouringvolcano, Katla, erupts, which is capped by a huge glacier? A scenario the town’s inhabitants shudderto think about.
Fíor Scéal will broadcast at the new time of 23.00 every Thursday on TG4 with repeats at 00.30 onTuesday nights.
