Experts in virtual reality, computer science, linguistics and interactive media to explore the digital future of the Irish language at all day Greasán na Meán seminar, Thursday 10th March.
As a part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, Gréasán na Meán Skillnet, the Connemara Gaeltacht based training network present an all-day seminar in partnership with Údaras na Gaeltachta and ROSG on Thursday 10th of March at the Connemara Coast Hotel, Galway. The one-day workshop will explore the digital future and advancement of the Irish Language Community. The organisers believe that in this digital age of technological revolution the Irish language community is in a unique position to exploit new technologies and advancements in the virtual spectrum.
Experts in virtual reality, computer science, linguistics and interactive media will present the potential for new technologies to grow the Irish language community online, promoting the development of an international virtual Irish language community. Innovators of major Irish-language organisations from the fields of television, radio, education, publishing and the digital domain will discuss the future of the Irish language and international speakers will include expert in linguistics, Kevin Scannell, Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at St. Louis University, USA. Also speaking at the seminar is Dr. Aodhán Mac Cormaic, Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht who will preview the soon to be published Irish Government’s new digital plan for the Irish Language.
The growth of online opportunities for the Irish Language are staggering in this digital era, and Gréasán na Meán are delighted to offer attendees the unique opportunity to gain the skills necessary to deliver revolutionary content in the Irish language to a worldwide online platform while adapting to new digital habits in today’s constantly evolving and digital world. Simultaneous interpretors and headsets will be available on the day to allow for bilingual engagement and creative interaction among attendees from all backgrounds and fields of interest.
Established in 2003, Gréasan na Meán is part of the national Skillnets Network, and is composed primarily of Gaeltacht-based and Irish speaking companies based on the Ros na Rún campus in An Spidéal, Co. na Gaillimhe. Skillnets is a network of businesses that have come together to develop new skills from training experts in all aspects of business and from each other. Training, innovation, communication, talent and storytelling in every form is at the heart of the Gréasan na Meán group, who endeavour to develop competence and skills in media hopefuls and employees to support the flourishing media industry in the West of Ireland.
The Gréasán na Meán Skillnet is linked with an ever-growing hub of media in the West of Ireland. At present their network membership is over 60 companies which have identified training needs that can be best addressed through an innovative and collaborative teaching approach.
