Liam O'Flaherty: Islandman Abroad > Overview

Producer: Ciarán Ó Cofaigh
Director: Mac Dara Ó Curraidhín

This film examines the life and times of Liam O'Flaherty as an author who wrote both in English and in Gaelic. We are shown his early life on the island of Aran, his schooling, his soldiering and his struggles as a young writer. Particular attention is paid to his relationship with the Gaelic language and to why he didn't write more in it. Writers, literary scholars and friends speak about his work and their acquaintance with him. Use is made of archive footage and still pictures that have never been seen publicly before.

Islandman Abroad was the winner of the Best Arts Documentary at the Celtic Film Festival.
